I have entered some that required an entry fee, although it wasn't much ($10 to $20) but I would only pay to enter a contest for two reasons: 1) if the prize was large enough to be worth my time, effort, and the entry fee, and 2) if the contest was prestigious enough to look really good on a resume if you even make it to an honorable mention or a finalist.

I haven't yet won a writing competition, but that doesn't keep me from entering them!

It really depends on how comfortable you feel about the contest or competition. If you want to pay a nominal fee of $10 or $20 to enter a contest that is paying $100+ as a prize, you may want to give it a try. If not, look for local magazines and newsletters in your area and submit your work to them. I did this when I lived in Ohio. I wrote a poem based on the cover of an issue of The Ohio Writer Newsletter, and they published my poem in the following newsletter. Good luck!

Personally I would not pay to enter a competition, though I would submit content for free if I though it would potentially lead to paid work in the future. Trazzler is an example of a company where you can do the latter.

I see a lot of travel writing contests/competitions being offered to writers. Are they worth it? Some are free and some can cost $20+. Has anyone won a travel writing competition/contest? Please share your experience. Thanks <img src="http://www.travel-writers-exchange.com/Forum/my-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_smile.gif" title=":)" class="bb_smilies" />
