Hi Richard

Actually I save most of mine, or at least any that pertain to a trip - I put them into the large (gallon-size) ziploc bags, along with notes, tickets, etc., then I put the destination and date of the trip on the outside (with a sharpie, so it's permanent). I use this when I am writing or researching articles, and I've often written multiple articles from the same trip, sometimes months (or longer) afterward, so I just don't feel comfortable letting go of anything......I know, friends label me a pack-rat, and I'm not really that bad, but I do keep things like that for a long time.

But all that said, if you have no need of keeping them, I'm a huge believer in reuse/recycling......

Another idea would be to give them to a local school or daycare - sometimes the kids just cut out the pictures for collages - or to a local nursing home, where folks might enjoy reading the magazines or guidebooks.

Good question. When you travel and finish using your guidebook, you could give it to someone else. You could take your information and turn it into a collage. Or, you could recycle your materials if your city provides recycling.

I'm curious to know what you do with old travel information such as guidebooks, catalogs, travel magazines, itineraries, etc...How could you recycle these materials? Where would you recycle them? Any other ideas, please share. Many thanks!

Thanks for the feedback. I probably won't write my guidebook in a few days or weeks Maybe I'll start off with a "mini book" and see where it takes me.

It depends on the writer. I know people who write fiction books and screenplays in a few days or weeks! Every writer is different. As Trisha said, it depends on how in depth the guidebooks is. Good luck!

Hi Angela

That depends on how in-depth of a guidebook it is - I have seen (and used) some that are more of a "mini" guide, they don't try to cover everything but instead are focused on just "things to do".....so your guidebook could be short or long depending on how comprehensive you want it to be (or the publisher wants it to be....if you're not self-publishing, then the publisher should give you a pretty clear outline of what they want).

I haven't written a guidebook (yet!) but I did just come across this book on Amazon that I have been thinking about getting.....you may want to take a look at it...

Crafting the Travel Guidebook: How to Write, Publish & Sell Your Travel Book

And yes, that is an affiliate link, so if you buy it using that link I get around .30 or .40 cents... and I appreciate it as every little bit helps cover the cost of running this site and forum!

Hopefully others who have more experience with guidebooks will chime in....I know we have a few members who HAVE written them.

Hi MetroCity1

Right now I'm about midway through Rolf Pott's book "Marco Polo Didn't Go There" which I'm finding to be a fabulous teaching tool as well as a very entertaining read.

Rolf Potts is one of the finest working travel writers around, and his gift to the rest of us in this business is that he included end notes following each chapter to explain his writing process, how he decides to structure a story, and how he decides what to include and what to leave out. It's priceless, and I highly recommend it to any aspiring or experienced travel writer - everyone will learn something from it.

I haven't read any new travel writing books lately. My favorite one is by L. Peat O'Neil: See the World, Sell the Story.
