I am not aware of any legitimate publication that "tests" random people to see if they'd be good writers.....the skeptic in me smells a scam......I am willing to bet that if you take the test, they will reply and tell you that you "could be a paid writer if you just sign up for our course, which costs (insert whatever amount they want you to pay)...."

My guess is that it's just a marketing ploy to sell you something, and won't by itself result in any writing assignments.....just a hunch....

It couldn't hurt to take the test. Just remember, many of the finest writers never had "proper" schooling. Just because someone gives you their opinion of your writing doesn't mean you can't be a writer. The internet has proven that!

I recently received something in the mail about taking a "free test" to see if I'd be a good candidate to write for publications. What are your thoughts on these "tests?"

Someone told me to check the travel section of my local newspaper to see if readers are asked to submit a brief synopsis (with photos) on "where did you travel this year?" Just something to think about...check your local newspapers to see if they have something like that or maybe they ask for "filler" articles. You never know what could happen...BillieJean

Another tip is to take two photos of the same setting/scene - one with people in it, one without - and submit both. That way if your article is chosen for publication the editor has a choice of which photo to use based on whichever seems more appropriate at the time. Also, some editors like to see people, and some don't. Since you never know which one might be the "tipping point" that makes them decide to publish your piece - why not double your odds!

The answer to your question is YES! More and more publications such as newspapers and magazines are asking for photos to accompany a travel article. Remember the saying "a picture is worth a 1,000 words." Make sure your photos are high res such as 300 dpi (dots per inch) or more. A digital camera is a great investment for a travel writer. They've come down in price which is a good thing.

Bonus...You can sell your photos to publications and online websites. Not only can you make a living from travel writing but from the photos as well.

Yeah, getting published can take some time. Guidelines can be extensive and you must read through them carefully. Editors will toss out anything that doesn't fit with what they're looking for. Here's a tip - if you want to be published in a travel magazine, read a few articles and get a feel for the style and tone of the magazine. This can increase your chances of getting an editor to look at your article. You can always contact the editor and pitch an idea. Give it a try, maybe the editor will be in a good mood that day{!}

Hi Metro City1! Are you from the UK? The "cheers" at the end caught my eye. Say hello to London, Bath, Edinburgh, York, and all of the other great cities in the UK! Now that that's out the way, onto answering your question.

Getting published can be a bit tricky. The easiest and fastest way to become published is through article marketing sites such as Ezine Articles. Now, if you would like to become published in a major newspaper or magazine that could take some time.

Editors are busy people. If you're going to submit a travel article to a travel publication, make sure you READ the guidelines. It's best to understand the submission process before you send off your article.

Also, make sure your copy is error free. Have a few people read your travel article. If you know someone who is a "grammar guru," ring them up and ask for their help.

I hope this helps.
