Hi Sarah......good questions!

Ideally you want a niche that is narrow enough that you can 'dominate' it, but broad enough that people are searching for information related to it on the internet. It does you no good to choose a niche that is SO narrow ( or so obscure ) that no one is searching for it, because then no one will come to your site.

So that's why it's critical to do research to find out who would be your target market, and how big that market it. Start by listing the topics you're passionate -- and knowledgeable -- about, then dig into some keyword research on keywords related to those topics to see how many people search on them and how many other websites compete for those people (of course checking out the top dozen or two of those competing websites). Broaden or narrow your research until you get to a point where there is still sufficient people looking for information on that topic but where you feel you can compete well with the other sites -- that should be your niche.

Martha, it can be daunting. I've been studying this information for about a year. I thought I was tech savvy, but I learned that there is sooooooo much more to Google and other search engines, etc...

There are a lot of "gurus" out there who will tell you to do this or that. I think one POPS UP everyday! Start out slow and build from there. Don't fret over it and don't freak out...I picked it up and so can you!

Jeepers! There's so much that goes into an online business. I really had no idea. Not sure if I can handle it. May be too much for me...

It can be difficult to define a niche. Make sure you do a ton of research before you decide on a niche market. I've signed up for information on Chris Carpenter's Google Cash Detective and Howie Schwartz's information. No, I haven't purchased their products, but their videos do a great job walking you through a niche market and how to define it and then do PPC marketing (if you're interested). Do a Google search on these guys -- sign up today!

It is important to define your niche so visitors to your website know what it is about. It can be confusing to visitors if your NICHE is not clearly defined. Make sure your website CLEARLY states what it's about as well. You don't want to confuse people!

Good question. The "affiliate and online marketing gurus" tell and will show you (purchase their products) how to drill down a niche. I recommend Chris Carpenter and Howie Schwartz. Anyway, let's say you enjoy European Travel. This is a very, very broad topic. Many countries make up Eastern and Western Europe. If you focused on Europe as a whole, you could get lost! Even if you focused on countries within Western Europe, you're still covering a lot of ground. It would be best to focus on one country or region so you can provide good content for readers.

For example, I love the UK. I focus on the Scotland and England. However, I mostly focus on London, England and Edinburgh, Scotland. I know these are popular tourist destinations. I could focus one either England or Scotland, but I happen to love both of these area. I chose not to focus on Wales because I felt it would overextend me. I'm busy as it is

I hope this helped...

I've heard that a niche is best if it's narrowly defined. Is this true? How narrow does it have to be? Thanks!

Be careful when you do Google AdSense. Some people tell you to put the actual URL of the company's website in the URL space when you create an ad. If this is trademarked, you will not be able to do this. I received an email from one of my affiliates and they asked that I remove the link and not use their company name because it's trademarked. Ironically, Google accepted the ad..I changed it...we'll see what happens.

I just learned about Google AdWords Keywords Tool. You can find keywords by searching a webpage URL. When you go to Google AdWords Keywords Tool, you have a choice to search "descriptive words and phrases or website content." Use website content and see what keywords are returned.

For example, if you have a travel niche you would like to get into, find a website that is already up and running, copy and paste the URL into the "webpage URL" and see what keywords and phrases are found. You'll be surprised how much time this can save you. Good luck!

Mates, I agree that making money from affiliate marketing can be tricky. Work with organizations as their blogger/copywriter. It helps if you know SEO or SEM (search engine marketing). The more you know...
