Trisha and Sarah, thanks for the advice. I never thought about modifying comments if they're obscene. I agree that everyone has their opinion. I think the internet gives people more confidence to say what they want that they may not necessarily say in person.

This is an issue that every blog owner will have to deal with at some point or other, and everyone is free to handle however they feel is best, all we can do is offer our opinions.

Personally I don't believe in censoring comments (with the exception of spam - those I remove immediately), because as Sarah said, everyone has their opinion and will express it. I don't remove an entire comment because of obscenity, but I will redact offensive words, or modify them so that you can figure out what they wrote, but lessen the offensiveness of it.

Of course, if someone is a repeat offender, leaving nothing but offensive and/or hateful comments, without ever contributing anything positive, I will take steps to block them from reaching my site - there may be plugins that will do this but I just block their IP address through some server commands.

Yeah, this can be tough. If the comments are obscene then I'd remove them. If it's banter going back and forth, I'd leave it. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and will express it. The comments will draw people to your site because they'll want to know what's happening on your site. Be professional, polite, and firm when you respond. Avoid stooping to another person's level. Napoleon Hill said it best, "...opinions are the cheapest commodity."

I consider myself an open-minded person and respect the opinions of people. A reader left a comment on one of my posts and called me a name -- it wasn't vulgar. At first, I took it as a personal attack then I got over it. I do my best to live by the motto of "what other people think of me is none of my business." Did this ever happen to you? How did you handle it? I want to create a safe environment for my readers and wouldn't want any of them to feel attacked. Thanks!

I agree. When in doubt delete the comment. Again, leaving the comment approval off, Wordpress's Akismet plugin is absolutely perfect.

I definitely agree with Gary - he makes another very important point.

I "edit" comments that use a spammy Keyword as their name (like his example) - if the comment adds nothing to the conversation, I remove it.....if it's a really good comment that adds value, I change the name to Anonymous, delink it from the URL, and email them directly to ask them to not spam my blog, but to feel free to comment using their own real name in the future.

Thanks guys. I am glad that I am thinking the same way you guys do about the moderation of comments. I do want to stimulate a discussion, so I will change my settings. I will keep an eye on expletives, though.
I have activated the Akismet plugin and will be diligent about removing any spam that still manages to get through.

Now all I have to do is finishing off my site and start blogging, so that people actually have something to comment on...

WordPress does a great job at catching spam. I've removed comments because they had nothing to do with the post. I don't allow offensive (using expletive words) to appear on my post, but I do allow people to voice their opinion. The more diverse the comments the better. Everyone won't agree with you just roll with it

I do not moderate my comments. I don't have to approve a comment to make it go live.

However, I am very agressive about killing spam.

If I someone leave their name as "Cheap Hawaii Vacations" or put keyword filled links in the comment, I will spam it no matter how relevant the comment is.

I'm pretty picky about leaving my site clean in the eyes of Google.
