Have you recently returned from an unforgettable trip abroad?

IBTraveler is pursuing previously unpublished material for a new series called "Recently Returned." We seek insightful narratives from a recent trip that evoke the sights, sounds, and smells of a destination. A strong voice and a clear point of view are paramount. We are not interested in top ten lists, journal entries or guidebook-style information.

What we can offer is a byline and a link to any blogs you may have to help you draw more traffic to your personal site. You will retain the copyright for your work. However, we reserve the right to reproduce the content as needed. This is a good opportunity for emerging writers to build up clips and get published with a global news organization. It's also a good way for travelers to share their stories with a larger audience.

Please submit a completed manuscript to k.dutile@IBTimes.com with the words, "Recently Returned" in the subject line. Submissions should be approximately 750-1000 words, though quality is more important than quantity. Due to the volume of submissions, we regret that we cannot respond to each entry. However, if your article is selected, we will notify you before publication to create your byline and discuss any photos you may wish to contribute.

We look forward to reading your stories!

Hi Everyone,

Though I’d ask your advice as am in a bit of a quandry. I’m a beginner travel writer, having done it entirely for the love of it and amusement of friends so far, and travel relatively little compared to anyone doing a round-the-world trip or living in another country for years (although aspire to travel more). I’m hoping to start my own travel blog in the near future, and that’s where I need your help. I write (and want to keep writing) longish narrative style travelogues rather than guidebook-style features or travel tips or similar. The principal aim is to get better at writing, amuse more people than just my friends, and hopefully inspire potential traveller in an indirect way – and although I obviously wouldn’t say no to being paid for my efforts, I realise just how near impossible it is and also have a 9-5 job which I’ve no intention of giving up – so earning is not a goal at this stage.

The question is, do folks bother keeping travel blogs for similar purposes, or is a travel blog something that is potentially meant for ‘quick digestion’ travel banter, i.e. the said and despised tips on “why a passport might be handy for international travel”? I’m aware that any writing is obviously done differently for web than for print, and what I’ve written so far is more long and thorough rather than short and snappy. Having looked through a lot of existing blogs, I notice that most authors tend to keep their “serious” writing elsewhere (presumably, for the potential or existing glories of being printed) and primarily use the blog for marketing, rants or light stuff. As I would like to grow as a writer, is starting with a blog defeating this purpose – and should I aim to squirrel away everything I write and work on being published in print, instead?

Any advice, musings, related tales of joy and woe much appreciated.

Hi I just found a link to this site on one of my friends web sites. I'm so glad to find the site. I work as a Travel Blogger Photographer and have many Travel Web Sites online that I edit and several I work for as a Travel Writer. My works have been published internationally for over 25 years now. Some of my recent consultations have been in the production of the design and layout of Travel Atitlan as well as recent work on Travel Gaia...

Travel writing and photography is my passion and I hope to spend many hours here sharing stories and reading material from others. Since the Travel Blogging area is my latest area to indulge my pen.

Thank you for the beautiful site, I will leave you now to browse a bit.

If you have a garden or a special place outside, that'd be a perfect spot to write. I write in my office at my desk but that's because I rely (sometimes too heavily) on my laptop. I often wonder how I would manage without it or what on earth I did before I got it. I can generally write anywhere and yes, even without this laptop, but I prefer the solitude of my office. I am surrounded by my books and their words inspire me to write. Do your journal? I have been journaling (long hand) for years and enjoy taking it out to the garden to do so. Also, when I was on camping trips, I always took my journal and wrote a bit in it while sitting at the water's edge. I have discovered that when I'm writing a western, the return to nature inspires me even more. I had a beta-reader tell me that she could almost hear the creaking of the leather on the saddle. That made my heart sing!

Oh my gosh Sarah I'm so sorry for missing this post! I hope you haven't done anything with your categories yet....

Although you can certainly do that - delete categories or change the names of them - it's something you must do with caution and care, because any posts in that category (that you want to delete or change) may have been indexed by search engines or linked to from other sites (via comments you've left of blogs that use the CommentLuv plugin, or via trackbacks and pingbacks), or possibly any links you've created from another post pointing to that post......and when you change a category name you may be changing the URL if your blog is set up to display the category name as part of the permalink.

You can find out by browsing some posts in your categories that you want to delete, and look in the address bar. If the category name is part of the URL, then you should use a plugin that will create page redirects (aka 301 redirects) for you to avoid any broken links and giving people a 404 error (page not found). Follow its instructions for each post in the category to be deleted/changed.

Good luck if you decide to do this!

Yes, personally I would always publish a guest post on my blog myself. Even if I set it up in such a way that it looks if the guest-poster had posted it himself.

I like to read guest posts first before I publish it.
