A Travel Writer’s Dream Kit Come True, Maybe

Travel fiction can be a refreshing approach to writing about travel. There are many ‘non-fiction’ books on the market and a work of fiction could be a breath of fresh air that a Publisher is looking for. Many travel writers submit a guidebook or a ‘travel tips’ book. Set yourself apart and take a stab at writing fiction.

Travel Fiction writing is a genre that has many intricacies. There’s plot, character, and scene development. Of course, before you begin to write your story, you may answer questions such as: Who’s the protagonist? Who’s the antagonist? How will the story end? There are many layers to a fiction novel and Writer’s Dream Kit can help you to reveal those layers.

Travel writers interested in writing travel fiction may want to consider using Writer’s Dream Kit, which is made by the same software developers as Dramatica Pro (Read our review of Dramatica Pro).

Writer’s Dream Kit is a “lite” (or beginner’s) version of Dramatica Pro, and is perfectly suited to travel fiction that is not overly complex, or that changes point of view. It’s function is to provide you with the organizational structure necessary to keep your plot moving forward and your characters consistent from start to finish.

If you have no problem with the creative aspect of writing, but need help with organization and structure, such as getting your scenes in the right sequence or keeping your characters where they’re supposed to be, Writer’s Dream Kit may be the right tool for you.

What we like

  • The cost is only $59.95 (but can be purchased for less at Amazon). Many other programs designed to aid with fiction writing cost much more;
  • The software comes with ‘sample stories’ by well known authors who share their ‘model’ of plot design;
  • It’s available for both Mac and Windows;

What we don’t like

  • A lot of story “setup” in the form of questions needs to be answered before you being writing your story. Although very helpful, this may irritate some users;
  • Lacks some features of other fiction writing software (this is why it’s referred to as a ‘lite’ writer’s software). Other (more expensive) programs have a more detailed plot, character, and scene features;
  • It could be complicated for some users. The manual is very thin, so a more detailed guidebook could be useful to some users.

Writer’s Dream Kit may seem too ‘lite’ for experienced travel fiction writers or it may appear to be too ‘soft’ for beginners. It really depends on the type of writing software you’re looking for. If you prefer a software that’s jam-packed with features then Writer’s Dream Kit may not be for you. On the other hand, if you’re familiar with fiction writing this software may satisfy your needs, and if you’re a beginning author, it may be a good stepping stone to a more sophisticated tool such as Dramatica Pro, or teach you enough to compose and organize an entire work of fiction on your own.

Perhaps you’d like to try it before you buy it. You can download the Writer’s Dream Kit demo version and use it for a couple of weeks.

    • Hi Laura
      Writers Dream Kit is designed to help you structure a story, as well as to develop both plot and characters, but it doesn’t really help with the writing basics. If that’s what you’re looking for, you might give Whitesmoke a try (they have a free trial, and you can read our two-part review of it here: Whitesmoke Review – Part 1 and Whitesmoke Review – Part 2 of it as well) – OR you could check a local community college to see if they offer a beginning writer’s course. Good luck!
