Jump Start Your Creativity With a Coach

Updated: Mar 12th, 2010

Travel writing is fun and exciting, but it’s still writing, and you may feel stuck from time-to-time. Writer’s block may settle in for a period of time which can drive you nuts! You many not know what to write. You may end up getting frustrated and then quit writing. If you want to get to the “root” of your writer’s block or lack of creativity, consider hiring a creativity coach. It helps if someone else can formulate a strategy, because if you’re stuck in a rut you may not see one.

Just like athletes can bring their skills to new levels and perform better by having a great coach, so can your writing skills improve if you find a good coach that takes the time to get to know you and help you develop the right “game plan”. Your best travel writing still may be inside of you. Don’t throw it all away because you’ve been feeling like your creativity has left for good. Coaching can help release all of those great ideas that were being stored inside of you.

Rebecca’s Thoughts on Creativity Coaching

I’ve been working with creativity coach, Martha Zlatar since February 2009. I purchased Eric Maisel’s book “Coaching the Artist Within: Advice for Writers, Actors, Visual Artists, and Musicians ” and visited his website. I emailed Eric because on his website he stated that he’d offer 16-weeks of FREE creativity coaching with a creativity coach in training. I was very lucky. I don’t think this service is being offered anymore, but you can still hire a creativity coach.

I have many writing projects going at once. I wrote a short story and decided to turn it into a novel. This was not working. I wasn’t feeling it. I worked with Martha, trying desperately to get into the groove of writing a novel, but it turned out that I just wasn’t feeling it. I took a screenwriting class and realized that perhaps writing a fiction novel isn’t for me. I’m a very visual person and a BIG PICTURE person. I decided to take the short story and turn it into a screenplay. I’ve been working on it ever since. I realize that if I get stuck, I take a “time-out” and regroup. Forcing your writing doesn’t work.

Working with Martha has been a great experience. We converse via email and or phone. I have so many creative ideas that I’ve been writing them down since I’ve been working with Martha. In addition to helping me with my screenwriting, Martha has helped me with writing for Travel-Writers-Exchange.com. Hey! Even I can suffer from writer’s block! She helped me to look at my writing from different perspectives. This has helped me a lot.

The biggest obstacle for me as a writer is to NOT allow myself to feel limited by any particular genres, but this doesn’t work for everyone. Remember that if writing is in your heart and soul then it’s more than just what you DO, it’s who YOU ARE. It may take a while for you to find your niche, your writing style, or your voice, but keep working at it and it will eventually fall into place for you. Just don’t overlook the benefit you can get from a good coach.

Final Thoughts

Hiring a creativity coach is a great idea. You may need a few weeks or few months of coaching. It can do wonders for you. In fact, you may find that other areas of your life improve because of it. If you’re a travel writer feeling unmotivated to write, find a creativity coach today. Your writing will improve tomorrow!

  1. Never thought about hiring a creativity coach before. That’s great that your coach has helped you. I know I can suffer from boredom and writer’s block. Sometimes I think it’s a “deeper.”

  2. Yes, you can hire a coach for anything these days. The first step is to admit that you can use some help, then you go and find it or draw people to you that can help you. Eric’s website was very interesting. I think I could see myself being a creativity coach. I have the ability to “reach” people and get to the “core” or “root” of a problem. I know I can help travel writers to find their “niche” and produce their best writing yet.

  3. Just found this site, very nice! I think it’s fabulous that there are creativity coaches. I’m a multi-talented artist. It would be nice to speak to someone who would understand me as an artist; we are a different breed — free thinking, flowy, creative, etc…

I know my writing and design work would benefit from a creativity coach. Thanks for the links and your testimonial.

  4. Like the post. Sometimes I think I can use a Life Coach. That would be just great. Sometimes I do feel stuck with my writing. It would be interesting to find out how a creativity coach could help me find and keep inspiration within me. I may check into this.

  5. I’m glad everyone liked the post! Working with a creativity coach has helped me a lot with my writing. I’ve grown as a writer. I have many creative projects going at once. The one thing I’ve learned from working with Martha is to work on the project that you’re drawn too. Don’t try to force your writing because you’ll make things worse. It’s all right if you have to put a project on the “back burner” or ditch it all together. It just happens.

I look back at my early writings (sounds weird), and I can’t believe how much my style has changed. I know I found my VOICE and will continue to work and grow with it. Keep writing!

  6. Great post. Never thought about hiring a creativity coach. It’s not a bad idea for writers and artists. We can all use a little help and perhaps we’ll learn something about ourselves along the way. Cheers!

  7. A creativity coach, huh? Never heard of anyone having a creativity coach before, guess there’s a first time for everything. It couldn’t hurt if you really need help with your creativity — sounds kind of funny…hiring someone to “coach” your through creativity.
