Market Your Travel Writing with Blogs, Podcasts, and Social Sites

Updated: Mar 24th, 2009

Travel writing is a fun “niche” writing market. Of course, within travel writing there are many “niche travel markets.” Are you doing all that you can to market your travel writing? If you’re not, then find out how you can better position yourself and your travel writing.

There are three main “niche” markets for you to promote your travel writing: blogs, podcasts, and social networks. It’s easy to write a blog, record a podcast, and network using social networking sites. Combine all three of these together and you can “spread” the word about your travel writing.

Many organizations spend a lot of money on advertising. But, you don’t have to follow in their footsteps! Blogs, podcasts, and social networking sites are free. Take advantage of the opportunity before you and start advertising your travel writing.

3 Ways to Market Your Travel Writing

  1. Blogs. You’ve heard it a million times already, create a blog! It’s a powerful communication tool on many levels. Not only can you use a blog as a portfolio, but you can sell products through affiliate marketing. You can also sell your eBook, travel guidebook, or travel memoir, on your blog.

You could create a monthly newsletter and send it to readers who “opt-in” to receive it. This is a great way to compile an email list. So –when you write that new eBook, you can send an email to your readers and let them know about it.

Remember, a blog can reach millions of people around the world. It’s a great way to attract new readers and potential prospects for freelance writing jobs.

  2. Podcasts. A podcast is “a series of audio or video digital-media files which is distributed over the Internet by syndicated download, through Web feeds, to portable media players and personal computers” (from wikipedia).

People love podcasts because they can take them everywhere. It’s great for marketing and building relationships with your visitors. Podcasts have unlimited potential!

The benefits of a podcast are: generate traffic to your website, you’ll become an authority in your “niche” travel market, free advertising, and you could land some freelance travel writing work. You never know who will see your podcast.

  3. Social networks. MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, StumbleUpon, Technorati, Digg, and countless other social networking sites can put you in touch millions of people. If you do not have a MySpace or Facebook page, go and set one up now! Just think of all the people you can reach by advertising your website on social network sites.

Businesses use these sites to market to the 12 to 21-year old crowd. Plus, many baby boomers (another great market for travel) are utilizing these social sites so they can keep in touch with their children and grand children, meet friends, and find a mate!

If you do not utilize social networking, you’re missing out on many opportunities to gain readers for your blog.

Travel writers use these three ways to market your travel writing. Each has the potential to make you a very profitable travel writer. Not to mention the fact you can have some impressive skills listed on your resume.

You never know, you could receive an opportunity with a travel organization who will pay you to create a podcast on their European destination packages (if that’s your specialty). The opportunities are unlimited!
