Discover 3 Simple Ways to Encourage Yourself

Updated: Mar 28th, 2010

The road to travel writing success may not be paved with gold for some travel writers. Instead, it may be paved with debris such as rejection, disappointment, regret, and heartbreak. Opportunity may knock at the door, but it quickly leaves for some reason. Travel writers are left with a “deer in the headlights” facial expression because he or she does not know why opportunity left. Some travel writers may analyze to death “why” opportunity left. Others will pickup the pieces and move forward with their aspirations.

Travel writers, encouragement is the key to moving forward. Do not wait for family and friends to “lift your spirits.” A way to build and keep encouragement is to start an encouragement file. This file can be kept on the computer or as a hard copy file folder. When someone pays you a compliment verbally (write the compliment on a piece of paper) or via email, put it into this folder. When faced with rejection, take out the folder and view each piece of “encouragement.” Read and re-read each email or letter and smile!

Second, look at the glass as half full. Perhaps that elusive opportunity was a blessing in disguise. The projects that presented themselves could have taken more energy and time than necessary. Clients could have been a pain in the neck; people who are never satisfied. Remember, once time is used, it will not return. Energy spent on projects could have gone towards something more constructive!

Finally, read quotes that are inspiring and uplifting. For example, Ralph Waldo Emerson said “Whatever course you decide upon, there is always someone to tell you that you are wrong. There are always difficulties arising which tempt you to believe that your critics are right. To map out a course of action and follow it to an end requires courage.” How about this quote by Christopher Morley, “There Is Only One Success – To Be Able to Spend Your Life in Your Own Way.”
