Travel Writers! Take Advantage of Trading Places!

Updated: Mar 28th, 2010

Do you live in New York and have aspirations of being a travel writer? Would you like to visit Dublin, Ireland? Here’s a tip for you, consider trading places with someone from Dublin, Ireland. Trading places or “homeswap” has become a very popular and inexpensive way to travel. Think of it as semi-FREE travel. The bonus: never pay for a hotel again! What a great “angle” for your travel article!

According to an article in The New York Times “so few people do home exchanges.” It is estimated that “hundreds of millions of people travel and only tens of thousands of people do home swapping.” As a travel writer, you could take advantage of this opportunity. Not only is this an inexpensive way to travel, it’s a wonderful networking opportunity. It’s also a way to make a new friend. By the time you make your exchange, you will not be strangers with that person in Stockholm, Sweden because you have been emailing and perhaps “ringing” each other many times. The bonus is you could be “trading places” with an editor or publisher. Aren’t you the lucky one!

Swap It!

  1. Airfarewatchdog. Find low airfare on all airlines, includes Southwest Airlines! Airfarewatchdog.com “includes special fares that you can only buy on the airlines’ own sites.”
  2. Digsville. Exchange your home for another! This is a fantastic way to travel in today’s economic and political climate. “Swap your primary or vacation home with someone in another destination and you’ll soon be hooked just like 1000s of Digsville members are.” The one-year membership is $44.95!
  3. InterVac International Home Exchange. Become a member today, travel to Belgium tomorrow! Please note that InterVac is not a free service. The membership fee varies from country to country.
  4. Home Exchange. An unlimited one-year membership is $99.95! If you do not find a “swap,” the second year is FREE!

Happy trading,
~ Rebecca

  1. This is such a great idea Rebecca! I’d never considered doing this before, but it makes a lot of sense in order to take advantage of longer-term travel and exploration for a minimal price.

  2. JoAnna,

I’ve thought about “trading places” with someone in the UK. It would be a great experience and travel writing article.
